Good news for US airlines (sort of). Passenger levels have now recovered back to pre 9/11 levels. That's the end of the good news, now for the bad; oil prices are still climbing, and they show absolutely no signs whatsoever of coming back down. This has led to severe problems for many airlines including some household names. US based Independence Air has ceased operating, whilst United Airlines have announced that they made a staggering $21bn loss for 2005 (much of that associated with bankruptcy costs - take all of that out and they still lost a ridiculous $557m or $1.5m/day) but they're "financially restructuring themselves". How their CEO Glenn Tilton has the balls to continue claiming his annual $950K slary whilst laying off thousands of staff is beyond me but hey. He ought to take a leaf out of Bolivian president Evo Morales' book, who halved his own pay because it wasn't justifiable but I somehow doubt he will. I could go on ranting about US Airways, Delta and Northwest, all of whom I think have overpaid boards and underperforming airlines, but let's not. Back to the crux of the chase - who flies where.

Sorry. One thing first: Picking a large carrier does not make you immune to being stranded - it happens - book if possible with a credit card as you are guaranteed some protection.

As with all other continents, readers are reminded for all airlines to factor in the cost of getting to and from airports (no frills airlines often fly from "Alternative" airports which may be further away). This may force you to reconsider and fly someone else from a more "normal" yet closer airport.

Oh for a wealthy investor with marketing experience... Canjet is still getting on with it and steadily continues to increase its hardcore loyal fan base. NB: This airline has a mystery shopper account from me from anyone interested - I liked them a lot when I used them.

Regular users may note that ATA's route seems to have been shredded. That's because it has. Lots of their flights are now codeshares and operated by Southwest. As such, you'll find those flights under Southwest!
